About this app

Qrew Football is an Android app for groups of friends who play football together, five, seven or eleven a side. It takes the admin out of the group chat: who’s in, who’s on the waiting list, fair teams, the score and who played best. The organiser only has to turn up at the pitch. It’s available in English and French.

Everyone answers in or out, and Qrew reminds whoever hasn’t. Teams are balanced from each player’s level, with the win odds shown before kick-off. After the whistle come the score and scorers, a Player of the Match vote with a card to share, badges and season leaderboards. Coach AI, part of Team Premium, runs the team from one sentence, typed or spoken, and anyone can connect their own AI assistant to Qrew for free.

How we built it

The problem

Every weekly kickabout has an organiser, and their week looks the same: chase replies in the group chat, keep the waiting list in their head, pick even teams without upsetting anyone, then remember the score. Most team apps are built for clubs with coaches and fixtures, not for a dozen friends who book a pitch on Tuesdays. We wanted the admin to take seconds, and we wanted AI to do the boring parts while the organiser stays in charge.

What we shipped

Qrew Football covers the whole life of a game. Create it once or every week, invite players with a link or a QR code, collect answers with a waiting list and reminders, balance the sides, then record the score, the scorers and the Player of the Match vote. Results feed badges, season leaderboards, an Elo rating and each player’s career across all their teams. Team chat, polls and one calendar for every team’s games are included, and when a game is one player short, people who play at the same pitch can ask to join.

Coach AI turns a sentence like “Create Tuesday’s game at 8pm” or “We won 7-6, Alex scored three” into the right action, and shows a card to confirm before anything changes. Premium teams also get a written match report after every game. The same actions are open, for free, to the player’s own AI assistant through an MCP server, which is what the film on this page shows.

Under the hood

Qrew is a TypeScript monorepo. The mobile app is built with React Native, Expo and Expo Router, and shares its domain logic, like team roles, matchmaking styles and roster rules, through small packages. The sport is a module of its own, so football’s formats and wording live apart from the screens.

Data lives in PostgreSQL on Supabase. The logic that has to give everyone the same answer, such as balancing sides, ratings, stats and badges, runs on the server rather than on each phone. Coach AI and the MCP server use the same actions as the app’s buttons, so a game created by talking to an assistant is the same as one created by hand.

Every change runs unit tests in each package, database tests, and an end-to-end test that plays a full game in a browser, from creating the team to recording the score. The website at qrew.team is a static Astro site, and the film was rendered frame by frame from an HTML animation.
