About this app

FrunkFriends is a social network only for Tesla owners. You join by signing in with your Tesla account, so every member is a real person with a real Tesla and there are no bots or fake profiles. Inside there’s a feed, a group for each model that only its owners can join, local groups, events with RSVPs, questions with accepted answers, encrypted private messages, and badges for miles driven and Supercharger check-ins.

It’s for owners at every stage, from first-month drivers with charging questions to club organisers who run local meetups. Members can attach live cards from their car to a post (battery level, odometer, tire pressure or the song playing in the cabin) and mention @frunky to get an answer from the AI assistant right in the thread. Each model group also tracks Tesla software updates, with a monthly recap of what changed. It runs on Android and in any browser, and it’s free to join.

How we built it

The problem

Tesla talk is scattered across Facebook groups, subreddits, forums and chat apps, many of them noisy and full of bots. We wanted one trusted place for owners to meet, ask and organise, with a simple rule for getting in: prove you own a Tesla.

What we shipped

Signing in with a Tesla account is the only way in, which keeps the network free of bots and fake profiles. Members choose what they share. A profile is required, while vehicle details and live car data are optional and can be switched off at any time. That split came straight from alpha testers.

The mobile app is built with Flutter and can ship fixes without waiting for a store review. The web app, built with Next.js, is designed for the desktop work that club organisers do, such as managing members, events and pinned posts. Public pages about each model’s software updates can be read by search engines, so owners find the community from a search.

Under the hood

The backend runs on Supabase, with Postgres at its core and scheduled jobs behind event reminders, recurring events and the monthly software-update recaps. Every action a member takes can become an in-app notification, a push message or an email. Heavier media work, such as processing photos and videos, runs separately so the app stays responsive.

Most features since the closed alpha came from tester feedback, including the web app, the permission choices and articles in groups.
